In American Plastic: A Cultural History, Jeffrey L. Meikle describes a 1942 ad in which General Electric predicts the postwar future of a seven-year-old girl: “Wearing plastic shoes instead of glass slippers, enjoying the labor of electric servants, and flying a plane ‘as readily as you would drive a car,’ she would inhabit a ‘fairyland’ made possi-ble by ‘new materials like plastics, new developments like television, new sciences like electronics.’

Well, I 'dunno' about you, but I have worn plastic shoes, and deeply regretted it. 
Still waiting on the electronic servants...
and there is no way I want to see some drivers in a flying plane (you know who you are). Lol.


All that being said--Atomic Age stuff is so cool!  
I have started to fall in love with lucite (as you read last week),
with funky shapes, and all sorts of 'snowflake' patterns.  


I really think what got me so interested was a pair of lamps that I picked up for the shop.

These were recently purchased by my friend 'Spookworks' on Etsy (her shop is cool, visit it!).


The color and shape of those lamps made me take a second look at Atomic Age design, and I realized just how optimistic it was.  It was actually made during an era where the phrase 'nuclear optimism' was commonly used!

We all need optimism, maybe not nuclear--but a hope for the future, a belief that tomorrow can be better than the pitfalls of today...that's never a bad thing.
